Special day showcases small businesses

The UK’s small businesses will step into the spotlight for a special day celebrating what they have to offer next month.

The country’s Small Business Saturday, which will take place on 7 December, is inspired by a similar US initiative that generated $5.5 billion in sales in 2012.

The event is supported by the government and other major political parties, along with small business organisations, local councils, larger businesses, banks and accountants.

The Small Business Saturday campaign is counting down to 7 December by featuring a different small business everyday on its Small Business Saturday Facebook page.

Meanwhile, new figures have revealed that the number of private sector businesses in the UK has reached a new record of 4.9 million.

Government data released on 23 October also revealed that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) employ 14.4 million people and have a combined turnover of almost £1,600 billion.

The 4.9 million businesses fall almost entirely in the SME category, with businesses employing fewer than 250 people making up 99 per cent of the total number. Those employing fewer than 50 employees make up nearly half of all businesses.
